Four study workspaces connected around a shared table for the PeerSpace project

PeerSpace

PeerSpace explores how a purpose-built digital environment can make peer learning easier to initiate, sustain, and study. The project focuses on the structures that help college students connect around shared academic goals, exchange strategies, and build a stronger sense of belonging.

Research question

How can a digital peer-learning space help college students form productive study relationships, participate consistently, and reach support when they need it?

Why it matters

Peer relationships are an important source of academic help and belonging, but access to those relationships is uneven and often depends on students already knowing whom to ask. PeerSpace examines how intentional design can lower the coordination barriers to learning with others while keeping the experience student-centered and supportive.

About the project

The project brings together research on peer learning, student engagement, and technology-supported collaboration. It considers how students discover compatible peers, how groups establish useful routines, and which design choices encourage meaningful participation rather than passive membership.

The 2026 work centers on developing the PeerSpace concept and defining an evaluation approach for its use in higher education. The team will examine participation patterns and student experiences to understand when a digital peer space expands access to academic and social support—and when additional human facilitation is needed.
